Connect, Learn, and Grow
with a global network of
Data Management Executives
The CDO Guild.
(site under renovation)
guild noun
1. A professional association of individuals sharing a common trade, craft, or skill, formed to establish standards, provide mutual support, and promote the interests of its members.
2. A network of professionals bound by a shared discipline or expertise, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and career advancement.

About The CDO Guild
The CDO Guild is a global network of data management executives who meet locally five times a year (or so) to network, learn, share, celebrate, commiserate, brag, and grow.
A typical meeting includes networking drinks, a fireside chat with peers hosted by the local chapter lead, and a thought-provoking, empowering presentation by an industry leader, academic, or practitioner.
You may arrive wondering if it'll be worth your time. You will leave feeling refreshed, empowered, encouraged, and more equipped for success as a CDO.

Why the CDO Guild
The role of the Chief Data Officer has emerged in response to the need to manage data as a strategic asset. More recently (as I argue in my book), the dominance of AI has reinforced the critical importance of managing data well: as the foundation for successful data science, AI/ML and now Generative AI.
There is an increasing focus on the CDO role from the Board level down (and its variations, CDAO, CDAIO etc). You would think it’s heyday for the CDO! However, as a recent McKinsey study highlights, 42% of CDOs don’t have a clear job description, and CDO tenure averages just three to four years — far shorter than other C-suite roles. Why is this the case, and how are we to address the challenges and opportunties of the role?

I have worked in data for over 30 years, from the management side, the vendor side and the strategic consulting side, as well as publishing a book on the topic. I interface with C-level executives almost every day in my current role. What I see is the need to bring CDOs and Heads of data (analytics, data science, AI) together to learn, refine, clarify, and strategize for success in a stimulating, limit-breaking, peer-focused environment. The need could not be more critical than it is now, and will only increase.
I have created the CDO Guild to meet this need.
